You may have also seen this commandment written as “You shall not take the Lord’s name in vain.” I think we naturally think of using God’s name as a swear word in this regard (and quick side note: interesting how we never take other gods’ names in vain. Perhaps because they don’t hold the same power?).
But we also need to be mindful of not mindlessly plastering God’s name across endeavors that DO NOT speak to His true nature (i.e., cults, preaching the Word but not practicing it, etc.), as well as swearing to God while lying or acting irreverently.
This is where prayer, discernment, and meeting with other believers are essential. It helps to make sure our ways align with His.
Let’s look at this another way. Perhaps we should ask ourselves, “In what ways can I bring honor to His name daily?” Loving the “unlovable,” bringing encouragement to others, vocally thanking Him for his goodness…the list is endless!
Search me, God, and know my heart.
Our God is a forgiving God, and all of us (raises hand), have misused His name one way or the other. Ask Him to forgive you for this and jot down three things you can do to bring honor to His name this week.

What’s on your mind?
